Patna being the capital city of the state is the largest city located at the southern bank of Ganga.
In the ancient time the name of the city was Pataliputra and it enjoyed the privilege of being the capital of the Magadha Empire for about one thousand years (600 BCE to 600CE).
Presently the city is the hub of administrative activities and educational institutes in Bihar. The river Sone flows at the west border of the district.
